Unearthing Hidden Histories from the Okefenokee
I’m thrilled to share a project close to my heart: the Company 1433 Project, a multimedia and educational initiative dedicated to uncovering and celebrating the legacy of the all-Black Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) unit that helped shape the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge during the New Deal era.
As Project Manager, I’m leading a team of historians, archivists, and educators to build a digital archive, develop lesson plans for Georgia classrooms, and share the untold stories of these men—their work, their resilience, and their enduring impact on the landscape. Together, we’re digging through historical records, gathering oral histories, and collaborating with local communities to ensure this important piece of American history is preserved and taught for generations to come.
It’s an honor to help shine a light on these hidden histories and bring them to life through storytelling, education, and community engagement. Stay tuned as we continue this exciting journey!
