A New Look at Tybee’s Dolphins

I’m thrilled to share a new project close to home and heart: Tybee Dolphins, a photography and video series exploring the lives of the wild bottlenose dolphins that frequent the waters around Tybee Island, Georgia.

For years, I’ve wandered these coastal marshes and tidal creeks, enchanted by the way these dolphins move through their world—fluid, social, intelligent, and undeniably charismatic. This project, created in collaboration with naturalist and boat captain René Heidt of Sundial Charters, brings together deep local knowledge and visual storytelling. Using high-resolution photography, slow-motion video, underwater footage (crossing fingers!), and drone perspectives, I aim to document their behavior and habitat in ways both intimate and expansive.

But this is more than a visual journey. Tybee’s dolphins are not just beautiful—they’re bellwethers of ecological change. Through storytelling, we hope to illuminate the pressures they face, from boat traffic and pollution to shifting food webs and climate change.

If you’re local, join us at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center at the end of July (tentatively July 23 or 24) for a special dolphin panel featuring René, myself, and Dr. Tara Cox—a professor of marine sciences at Savannah State University whose research focuses on the spatial ecology, conservation biology, and human interactions with marine mammals.

Stay tuned for glimpses into their world—and ours.
